bacon and tango

ULTIMO TANGO A PARIGI
a film that is pure art. one of those rare ones that gives me the sensation that sitting on a park bench a whole day would be a good idea;regardless of the weather.

bernardo bertolucci's fascination with francis bacon's images embodies the movie from beginning to end. like many of bacon's paintings, the movie plays out in the color orange. the subject matter is also reminiscent of bacon's obsesssion with the human body's potential for decay and distortion. adding to that, is the composition of the movie, the way the structure of the apartment has an almost circular quality to it, just like that of bacon's technique of dividing his canvases with an arc.

the opening scene is classic. brando cursing "fucking god!" is really all it takes.
