biker chicks

Richard Prince is best known for challenging the ideas of originality and authorship. he is an appropriation artist, known for his 'rephotographed' pictures. his photography is, simply put, a photo of an already existing photo. his images are taken from magazines and newspapers.

so i raised the question: where do you draw the limit when taking upon yourself to interact with an artist's work? more specifically, in my case, unintentionally using it for comfort. you see, when i went to see his work at the serpentine gallery i did something nightmarish. i leaned, unknowingly, on one of RP's art pieces. i'm sure, i'm not the only one to have done that, seeing how it was placed in a manner so that one would lean against it. it was one of his barrier sculptures. made out of cement, mind you. so there was no damage to it. it was just a careless act from my part in midst of deep discussion and observation

the biker chicks, featured above, are part of Richard Prince's series
"girlfriends" and "gangs" which he found in biker magazines and other sub-cultural lifestyle magazines. RP shines light on gang culture with all its stereotypes, but in the end, it is a celebration of those who rebel against social norms of american mainstream conventions.
